Information Sheet – Unit Coordinators

Dear Unit Coordinator,

You are invited to participate in a research study, which partially fulfils the requirements of my Doctor of Philosophy in Management. This research is being conducted under the supervision of Dr Sarah Dawkins, A/Prof Angela Martin, and Dr Gemma Lewis at the University of Tasmania.

The purpose of my study is to develop and validate a measure of authentic leadership. Authentic leadership is an approach that emphasises building honest relationships, displaying openness and being aware of their own personal strengths, weaknesses and the consequences of their actions. This leadership theory was developed in response to unethical behaviour in leaders in large corporations and government.

The questionnaire, in this stage of the study, is designed to collect data on the perception of leaders such as yourself. Your subordinates (e.g. lecturers and tutors) will be invited to anonymously answer similar questions in relation to your own leadership perceptions. You are being invited to participate in this study because you are a current Unit Coordinator at the University of Tasmania. Participation in this study is voluntary, and whilst your participation is greatly appreciated, there is neither reward for participation nor sanction for not participating.

If you do wish to participate, please complete the following questionnaire on your leadership behaviours. All data you provide will be treated in a confidential manner. You may choose not to answer any question or withdraw from the research at any time. All of the completed questionnaires will be stored in a locked office at the University of Tasmania. After five years of last publication, these paper records will be shredded and electronic records of the data will be deleted.

If you would like, you can request to be sent a summary of findings after the completion of this research. Aggregate results of this questionnaire will be reported in my PhD thesis, and may be published in a number of academic journal articles. This study has been approved by the Tasmanian Social Sciences Human Research Ethics Committee.
